So why buy the TC Sounds Epic 8?

For me its about the bass. Nearly every comment/review I’ve read has expressed how impressively low and clean the TC Sounds subs (in general) perform. I’m looking to try a good 8″ in a quarter wave design (transmission line) and I’m looking for a sub with a low fs for the starting point. The sundown SA-8v2 is .. 44hz (approx) DC Audio 8 is around 35hz, but the TC Sounds Epic 8 goes down to 28hz. Now before I get the naysayers chipping in with comments about how should dismiss the fs figure etc, for me … for me, I just want to find out, for my own ears.

Dismissing Critics

But there’s plenty of great comments about TC Sounds as a whole. I’ve only read one, slightly negative comment. However its one of those reviews where it states that “There are better options.” and then fails to suggest any. In my book such comments come through a lack of knowledge and/or experience and such comments are to be put down as a lame attempt to knock a good product. If the reviewer said; you’d be better off with JL or Rockford for this reason and that reason, It would sound more convincing, but writing an arbitrary negative comment is meaningless.

Cheap JL Audio 8WX subwoofer please

As the prices of some JL Audio gear has gone up in the UK, I’m hoping for a good price on the new 8WX subwoofer when it comes out in the UK. The 12WX retails for £79, the 10WX is £69 and so logic tells us that the 8WX should be £59. That’ll be nice! I’ve called Celsus (JL Audio Distributor) and as yet no release date or price for the 8WX, but I’m really, really excited.

Tiny TC Sounds Epic 8 on its own, or Passive radiator set up?

Buying a TC Sounds Epic 8 is somewhat of a dream to me, because they don’t ship to the UK, however last night I was looking into Passive Radiator set ups (more on that soon). Apart from being showered by boring ‘naysayers’ about going PR, I looked into various passive radiator projects and the results seem to be promising and impressive.

TC Sounds do their own range of Passive Radiators, from the huge VMP 18, to the VMP 12 Passive radiator.

To carry on the JL Audio theme, they’ve stuck the new TW3 subwoofers into special enclosures. These come in two basic forms. The TG series and the LG series. Personally, I’d like to get my hands on the CP112LG 12TW3 subwoofer.

According to some, slim subwoofers still need large enclosures to make them work efficiently, and although they’re thinner than you’re JL HO boxes, these enclosures are still quite large. Even with that said, I’d love to try one.

Until the TW3 slim subwoofers come out, there’s always the TW5 subs.

I am a fan of JL Audio Subwoofers, amps and speakers. I own of few of each including the JL Audio’s highest SKU subwoofer (according Chris Bennett @ Celsus), JL Audio 500/1 amp and a pair of JL Audio C5 525x speakers. I know that JL Audio products are well engineered, sound great for music, and contrary to popular belief, I think they’re well price. However, living in the UK, I just happen to prefer the U.S. prices to UK prices!

JL Audio 8WXv2 Subwoofer Driver

This is the one for me. I have the 12wx subwoofer, great budget subwoofer that performs … look if you’re into music, and you want a good thump, the WX series subs is the one to have. Yes there are some lunatic subs from the likes of Sundown E8v2 and the Candance S1W8 and S2W8, but I’m soooo excited about the new JL Audio 8WX subwoofer. For UK enthusiasts, I’ve contacted Celsus and they have confirmed that the JL Audio 8WX is coming to the UK. However no dates and prices yet.

CP106LG-W3v3

Another subwoofer for the compact market is the JL Audio CP106LG-W3v3 (or CP106 for short). I own the JL Audio CP108 and for music lovers I can’t recommend this sub enough. I stated before that if I were ever to buy a set of Morel Supremo speakers, I would be happy to have the CP108 as the sub in the system.

Now, for those who can’t fit the CP108 anywhere, there’s a new smaller version based on the 6W3v3 subwoofer and its about time to. The little 6.5″ subwoofer is a big seller. Whether as a stand alone subwoofer or to boost the midbass upfront, the 6W3v3 is a great choice.

For those with space issues, there’s the new slim subwoofers from JL Audio. The TW3 line looks sexy and slim. Just wish the price was as thin as the subs. However, I know that when it comes to music, the JL Audio Subs are worth the money, regardless of the criticism they receive.

Even though the Sundown SA 8v2 is out, the original Sundown SA8 subwoofers are selling like hotcakes. These little 8″ subwoofers are absolute monsters!

Hybrid Audio Technologies I6SW Specs T/S Parameters

Living in the UK we’re used to paying over the odds for a lot of things, so it’s no surprise the Hybrid Audio Technology speakers and subwoofers come at a premium. So it got me thinking, do I give them a try, or save nearly £100 and stick with the JL Audio 8W3v3 subwoofer? It’s a difficult one. No one has come forth with any kind of review. Pete aka PWK has come across with a preview, but as yet hasn’t followed it up with one of his famous build/installation videos. I guess Pete is too busy answer my questions on his forum.

Finding any used Hybrid Audio products is a rare luxury and even rarer in the UK. However considering that for the price of one Imagine i8sw subwoofer you can have nearly two JL Audio 8W3v3 subwoofers, for a relatively unknown and untested subwoofer, it’ll be an interesting prospect.

Sundown Audio E8v2 T/S Parameters

My friend has two Vibe Slick subwoofers in a (not so good) custom sealed enclosure. I want to rip them out and replace them with a properly designed enclosure, taking into account the Parameters available, the cabin gain of his car, and then designing an enclosure to fit his listening needs, in exclusion of simply asking him what he’d like the enclosure tuned to. Also I want to cut his power down a bit, and get him to try the JL Audio 10WX subs instead. He love the DD308 subwoofer lent to him, and he also like the JL Audio CP108LG 8W3v3 sub as well. I might try one 10WX sub in a better enclosure   a blind test to see if he prefers it to his twin Vibe set up.

The JL Audio 12WX I feel is one of best favourite budget subwoofers on the market. When my young friends show me there Sony explode 12″, Vibe 12″ etc, I think to myself; you could have had the JL 12WX instead. Sure, it’s not a powerhouse. You’re not going to be able to shove a 1k amp into this and think you’re going to get away with it, however fro serious music lovers and for the price, I struggle to recommend anything else with real conviction. For me the JL Audio 12WX and 10WX offer a brilliant and cheap bang for your money.
